It is divided into three populations, one of which is the Alxa type, commonly known as the Alxa Cashmere Goat. The central production area is Alxa Left Banner of the Alxa League in western Inner Mongolia, with distribution in Alxa Right Banner and Ejina Banner. There are approximately 1.13 million goats.
